Original Farthing Wood animals

Fox

Fox is chosen by the Farthing Wood animals to be their leader on the journey to White Deer Park. Half-way through the journey, the rabbits panic when crossing the river, and as a result, Fox gets hit by debris and taken down the river. The animals think that they have lost him forever, but Fox survives. He vows to find his friends again and continue on to White Deer Park. He meets Vixen while he is seperated from his friends. She helps him to find the others and becomes his mate. After the animals get to White Deer Park, Fox and Vixen have four cubs, of which two survive to reach adulthood.

Badger

Badger is Fox's close friend, and when Fox gets lost half-way through the journey to White Deer Park, he takes over as leader until Fox returns. Badger is an old animal and soft hearted. He helps Mole get to White Deer Park by carrying him on his back the whole way. When the animals reach White Deer Park and winter falls, Badger is injured, but the warden takes him into his house and helps him to recover.

Toad

Toad, the kind, good-humoured amphibian, is the one who comes up with the idea of the animals going to White Deer Park. He has made the journey once before already and acts as the animals' guide on their journey.

Mole

Mole is a greedy little animal and often gets himself into trouble because of it during the journey. Mole travels to White Deer Park on Badger's back. Once at White Deer Park, Mole finds a mate and they have a son. Mole doesn't survive the winter at White Deer Park though.

Owl

Owl is always around to offer wise sayings to her companions, much to their annoyance. She is however, quite valuable on the animals' trip to White Deer Park, offering much knowledge about human behaviour. She is rather hard-hearted sometimes though, jumping to conclusions rather too quickly at times. She never had hope that Fox had survived his trip down the river, for example.

Kestral

Kestral is a reliable bird and helps the animals a lot in their navigation during the journey to White Deer Park. She disappears sometime after getting to White Deer Park though and we never find out what happened to her.

Pheasants

The pheasants are a rather slow-witted pair of birds. The male pheasant is also very bossy and unkind, particularly towards his wife. His wife is very loyal to her husband though. Both the pheasants are shot by a farmer rather early on in the journey.

Weasel

Weasel's never serious, always messing around. She gets on the nerves of the other animals a lot. However, in the dispute between the red and blue foxes at White Deer Park, she remains loyal, despite being threatened by Scarface.

Adder

Adder keeps herself to herself and finds it difficult to control her instincts (with regard to eating the smaller animals) during the journey. She does however, help save Vixen by biting a fox hunt horse when Fox is making his way back to the others. She also carries out a favour for Fox (killing a blue fox) during the dispute between the red and blue foxes at White Deer Park.

Hares

There is a male hare and a female hare - mates. The male hare is very outspoken, stubborn and rather unsympathetic to others. He also wanted to be leader. The female hare is quite different to her mate. She is quite kind and empathetic to the other animals.

Rabbits

The rabbits are a family, with the mother, father and two babies. The rabbits are very panicky creatures and get Fox into a lot of trouble when at the river about half-way through the journey. Fox tries to help them, but ends up getting hit by debris and taken off down the river. He does survive though and makes his way back to the others. One baby rabbit gets shot and killed by a pheasant hunter during the journey.

Hedgehogs

The hedgehogs are kind-hearted creatures, but their spikes cause them problems when reaching the motorway towards the end of the journey, as Whistler is not able to carry them across. While they make it across the first bit of the road, the male hedgehog freezes up half-way across the second bit of the road, and his wife won't leave him. They both get killed by a lorry.

Mice

The mice begin the journey as a pair, but about half-way through, have babies. However, the babies are killed by a bird and the mice finish the journey as they started.

Voles

The voles are a mother and son. The son vole is a very outspoken creature, always complaining about how the larger animals do not give the smaller animals enough respect and consideration.

Shrews

The third group of very small animals. We don't get to know much about the pair of shrews.

Newts

The newts are a family of mother, father and son. Early on in the journey they find a pond that they like and decide to stay there, instead of going to White Deer Park.
